However, during this entire rocky cycle of development, Homestuck the comic was still on-going, and also going through very lengthy, very regular Hiatuses due to Hussie being pre-occupied. How was he supposed to know things would end up this way? Keep in mind I don't necessarily blame Hussie for this. The recurring theme of this is Hussie just completely underestimated how much would work go into this. Then they started working on it, and then also had to completely start over when they realize what they were making would take too long. When that fell through, Hussie then had to scramble together a game development studio from (Doc) scratch. Hussie originally intended to just hand it off to a well known studio The Odd Gentlemen and have them make it for him. We all know that Hiveswap had an extremely rocky development cycle. Hussie was ill-equipped and also unaware of the magnitude of work that goes into game development (Which he himself confirmed later).ĭuring this time Hussie was also juggling Homestuck proper which was still ongoing, and which he was still working on almost daily. He had no idea if it would do well, no real concepts to show (Trailer was entirely composed of HS footage), and no team planned to make it. I don't know how many of you remember, but the Hiveswap Kickstarter, or as it was known back then as the "Homestuck Game Kickstarter" was very much a "whim" on the part of Hussie. It's great.īut this isn't about the "game" itself but the concept of it and what went into making it. I think Hiveswap is a truly charming game and a welcome addition to the HS universe. I don't mean this as a dig at Hiveswap itself. You may be thinking: why did Marvus not just go re-direct the train himself? This is a good po If Marvus was a tetrarch, he'd also know more about what's going on that Joey and Xefros do, and he'd have a motive for befriending her and helping her navigate her way up to the front of the train. This all suggests to me that Marvus is a) actually on Joey's side, and b) potentially a member of Dammek's rebellion.Īlso, Dammek has a master plan that Xefros doesn't know about, but the other confirmed tetrarchs seems to know all about Joey and why she's here (though they haven't said anything about it). So the only troll that ends up dead from Marvus' game is another clown. And, he sent Joey to the back car to get snacks that don't exist - when she returned, Marvus had convinced Baizli to go after her and released Xefros, taking it in faith that Baizli would end up dead if confronted by Xefros and Joey together. When Joey tells him as much, explicitly, he tells her to shut up about it. He's not an idiot - he knows that Joey doctored Cirava's photo, and that she didn't actually bash Tegiri to death with a blunt sword. Except, he helps her get away with not doing any of those things while at the same time making it LOOK like she did those things for the sake of the other clowns. Then there's the murder game, when he asks Joey to murder three clowns - first a mustard-blood, then a teal-blood, and finally another clown. He supports her during the trial and helps her reach the clown car. But throughout the act, we never actually see Marvus do anything except help Joey. The big twist-that's-not-a-twist in Hiveswap Act 2 is that Marvus, the helpful clown that Joey believes is her friend, is actually an evil psycho-murder-clown, like all the other clowns. But if he's looking for a tetrarch, he's probably going to want someone with clout. From Dammek's tactical perspective, this makes sense - he needs allies, and given what we know about his manipulative nature, he isn't above tricking people into being said allies. Xefros and Chixie are both led to believe that they're the fourth tetrarch, but Joey believes - and it's strongly implied - that Dammek is leading them both on. Three tetrarchs are confirmed - Dammek, Fiamat, and popular party-seadweller whose name eludes me at the moment cause you don't meet her in person. I'm sure someone else has already thought this through but.
